Mnquma Municipality

Mnquma Municipality is an amalgamation of the former towns of Butterworth, Ngqamakwe and Centane and their surrounding rural areas. The rural areas, or magisterial districts, had been administered differently from the urban areas through the Transitional Representative Councils.

Vision
Mnquma Municipality will uphold the principles of democracy, create an enabling environment that facilitates the empowerment of the community economically, socially and legislatively to ensure sustainable and affordable services.

Geography and location
Mnquma Municipality is situated in the Amathole District Municipality, south of the Mbhashe Municipality. The municipality is dominated by rural settlements that are surrounded by communal areas that are used for agricultural and grazing purposes.

Main industries and business sectors
The current economic situation is plagued by high unemployment and lack of employment opportunities. The municipality has however outlined plans to develop a number of sectors to prompt growth and increase employment. The viability of creating a small fishing industry is being investigated, while agriculture and tourism have already been identified as sectors which can and should be developed. Agricultural activities, including pineapple, granadilla and other fruit farming, are part of the growth potential.

Main resources and attractions
Mnquma Municipality is richly blessed with high rainfall, a magnificent coastline and beautiful scenery throughout the region. The high rainfall allows for the potential growth of the agricultural sector, while the beautiful scenery is a natural tourism attraction that the municipality aims to tap into.
